A new blog post? So soon after the last one? Things must be changing.
That's right! Tomorrow I start teaching the first semester of the next academic year at Futureworks, teaching the same modules as last year. However, on the day after, I myself will become a student again. I will be starting the Sound and Music for Interactive Games Master's at Leeds Beckett.
This is a short redesign project I created and used as my submission to apply for the course
I had considered taking on a master's degree after finishing my honours but wanted to try getting into the industry without it. However, after attending this year's Game Audio Symposium in Leeds, my opinions changed. From speaking to the tutors and meeting a lot of the previous alumni, I realised this was an exciting way to further develop my skills and push my work to a higher level (or 'degree'). The Symposium was a lot of fun, well put together and very informative and I would recommend it to anyone who is involved in the game audio industry. I left it feeling very motivated, more so than I had in recent months.

Of course, taking on this degree will be a big commitment given that I will also be teaching simultaneously. After some guidance from other tutors, colleagues and friends, I decided to attempt completing the master's in one year, though I am aware I can change to two years if I find it too much. I hope to really hone my craft, meet more like-minded folk, and hopefully this will also benefit my employability alongside my teaching.
As to what else I have been up to since the last blog post, I have been preparing for starting this degree by refamiliarizing myself with Unity, Unreal and learning some MetaSound functionality.
But other than that, I have mostly been enjoying the summer break. I have been enjoying playing games such as Grounded, Heavenly Bodies and Firewatch. All of which are great games I'd recommend. I also have enjoyed a lot of movies/tv shows over the break, watching the new and old. Alien: Romulus, I Saw The TV Glow and Hunter x Hunter have been excellent watches.
Just over the recent weekend climbed a mountain! Hiking up Cadair Idris was a great challenge, with great weather and spectacular views, I feel invigorated and refreshed before starting this busy week (my knees are also jelly and this was the hardest hike I've ever done so I had to mention it).

I am very eager to get this academic year started, with both teaching and learning. Hopefully I will have more posts to add to this blog before the end of it. I am expecting it to be very full-on and hard work so forgive me if there is another wait until the next post. Thank you anyway for reading, I appreciate your time and, as usual, I would be happy to chat about any of the things mentioned in this post so just reach out!
Thank you,
Nick
