Above is the link to my first sound re-design project using the Unity engine. Have a watch and feel free to leave any feedback for me, it all helps!
More about this project
Searching for a project to showcase my new Unity sound redesign skills was not easy. Usually a good place to look for projects is on sites like Itch.io especially for Unreal Engine made games. There are plenty of games made in Unity on the site but the quality of those games is quite different and a lot of the creators do not have social contact links for me to get in touch.
Another good place to find projects would be in the ongoing game jams that can also be found on the site. However, there is a lot of competition in the community comment sections of the jams as many other sound designers and composers are always promoting themselves to teams.
Since I only needed a short project that I can use for a new demo reel I will be creating, trying to find a game jam team would have taken far longer. Therefore, I decided to find some of the freely available practice projects that Unity has made. The FPS project is one of the very first ones that Unity shows to beginners through tutorials on the learning pathways. I do recommend new users try it out in order to get used to the Unity layout and key features.
This game required some small sound elements but I knew I was not going to be showing my full sound design abilities through it. Hence, some of the sounds heard in the project are very simple and without reverb effects. I simply wanted to show that I know how to implement sounds into the gameplay through the engine.
My favourite part of this project was getting to work on creating and designing the laser blaster sounds which I have not done before. I am more than happy with how they turned out, especially the gun 'cooling' sound once it overheats. I hope I get to work on this kind of sound more in the future as was a nice change of pace and a good test of my ear for good sound design.
Hopefully, this project is a good addition to my demo reel. It shows I can work on different types of games as well as my new Unity skills. I will be trying to get into some game jams in the future which I can also add to my demo reel and project history. Upcoming, though, is a cinematic sound re-design of a game trailer with multiple different environments that I am excited to work on. Keep an eye out for that and thanks for reading!
